The energy sector is undergoing significant changes because of the energy transition. Although a large portion of the global energy market still relies on fossil fuels, the shift to sustainable and renewable energy sources – such as solar, wind, and hydropower – marks a major transformation in the industry. Numerous companies, organisations, and institutions are focusing on researching and developing new possibilities in the field of renewable energy. This includes not only a sustainable way of generating energy, but also efficient use and storage of energy.
Challenges in the global energy market
Despite the increasing number of innovative developments being introduced to the market, the global energy sector also faces several challenges. One of the major issues is climate change, and the urgent need to transition to low-carbon energy sources to collectively meet climate targets, such as those outlined in the Paris Agreement. In addition, energy security is a key topic in today’s world. Countries are striving to avoid dependency on a small number of suppliers by investing in international cooperation or self-sufficiency. Many countries are also experiencing grid congestion, which can cause issues for consumers and ultimately lead to rising energy prices. Nevertheless, these challenges also create numerous new opportunities and developments within the energy sector.
International grants for the energy sector
Around the world, the research and implementation of new technologies within the energy sector are being stimulated through a range of grant schemes. These aim to support research, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.
Various grants for energy projects
The European Union (EU) offers several funding programmes designed to encourage investment in innovative projects within the energy sector. Examples include Innovation Fund, Horizon Europe (spefically cluster 5: Climate, Energy and Mobility), the EU Missions, CEF Energy or LIFE.
Grants specifically for hydrogen projects
Hydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuels, although its application remains complex. For this reason, there are also grant programmes aimed specifically at hydrogen innovation, such as the clean hydrogen partnership, IPCEI Hydrogen or Innovation Fund renewable hydrogen auction.
