The cluster covers a wide range of themes, including climate science and climate risk assessment, renewable energy generation and storage, energy efficiency in buildings and industry, smart energy systems, and safe, resilient and sustainable transport. Whether you’re developing next-generation battery technology, smarter energy grids, low-carbon mobility solutions, or tools to better understand and respond to climate change, Cluster 5 offers a route to substantial European co-funding.

Why it matters

Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 requires a fundamental transformation of how Europe generates and uses energy, and how people and goods move around. Cluster 5 supports this transformation while strengthening the competitiveness and security of the European economy, reducing dependency on external energy sources and building resilience against the impacts of climate change. Projects typically bring together partners from research, industry and public authorities across several EU member states, combining technical excellence with a clear route to real-world deployment.

Funding levels are substantial: most projects are funded at 100% of eligible costs (for research-focused actions) or up to 70% (for innovation-focused actions), often as part of multi-million-euro consortium projects, with some of the largest single projects receiving up to €100 million.
