FlowBeams
FlowBeams is an academic start-up dedicated to transforming healthcare. What began in 2016 as a visionary concept for needle-free technology evolved into the launch of FlowBeams in 2021. Today, the company develops innovative needle-free injection technology designed to improve patient safety and comfort. Hezelburcht has supported the start-up from the earliest stages of the concept through to the further development of its technology.
FlowBeams
Founded in 2021, FlowBeams develops breakthrough needle-free injection technology. By bringing this innovative solution to market, the company addresses the needs of multiple industries while contributing to a more sustainable future.
Using laser technology, microscopic liquid jets are generated and propelled through the skin at high speed. This enables injections to be administered virtually pain-free, without the need for a conventional needle.
Beyond improving patient comfort and safety by reducing needle anxiety and needlestick injuries, the technology also offers significant sustainability benefits. Unlike traditional syringes, which are designed for single use and generate large volumes of hazardous medical waste, the FlowBeams system is reusable. The technology also opens up new possibilities for self-administration and personal care applications.
Hezelburcht’s support
Hezelburcht’s specialists first supported founder Professor David Fernandez Rivas (University of Twente) during the research phase in 2018. At that stage, we reviewed applications, including an ERC Starting Grant and an ERC Proof of Concept Grant. These projects provided the scientific and technological foundations that ultimately led to the creation of FlowBeams.
Following the company’s establishment, Hezelburcht remained closely involved. Our specialists successfully supported the team in developing and preparing its EIC Transition proposal, resulting in a € 2.5 million grant awarded in 2024 to further develop and commercialise the technology. In addition, we continue to support FlowBeams with its WBSO application.
This collaboration demonstrates how a promising research idea can grow into an innovative company with international impact. By supporting FlowBeams throughout multiple stages of its journey, from fundamental research and knowledge valorisation to commercialisation, our specialists have had the privilege of witnessing the company’s development first-hand.
We are proud of what has been achieved so far and look forward to supporting FlowBeams as it continues to grow and deliver meaningful societal impact in the years ahead.
