New MSCA Doctoral Networks 2026 call open for applications
The European Commission has officially launched the MSCA Doctoral Networks 2026 call. With an indicative budget of approximately € 593 million, this funding opportunity, part of the Horizon Europe programme, enables universities, research organisations, businesses and other societal actors to jointly develop innovative doctoral training programmes. Proposals can be submitted until 24 November 2026.
What are MSCA Doctoral Networks?
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks support international consortia in delivering high-quality doctoral training programmes. The scheme combines excellent research with advanced training in transferable and professional skills, preparing doctoral candidates for careers both within and beyond academia.
Consortia must consist of at least three independent organisations from different EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries. The programme strongly promotes international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange between academic and non-academic sectors.
Three types of Doctoral Networks
Organisations can apply under one of three funding formats:
- Doctoral Networks (DN): standard doctoral training networks;
- Industrial Doctorates (ID): doctoral programmes delivered jointly by academic and non-academic organisations, providing researchers with direct industry experience;
- Joint Doctorates (JD): highly integrated doctoral programmes leading to joint, double or multiple doctoral degrees.
These formats are designed to strengthen collaboration across sectors and equip doctoral candidates with the skills needed to address complex societal and technological challenges.
Focus on research excellence and transferable skills
MSCA Doctoral Networks place a strong emphasis on both scientific excellence and researcher development. In addition to conducting high-quality research, doctoral candidates are trained in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship, research integrity, Open Science, communication and digital skills.
By integrating research, training and international mobility, the programme contributes to strengthening Europe’s research and innovation capacity while supporting the next generation of scientific talent.
Early preparation is key to succes
MSCA Doctoral Networks are among the most competitive funding schemes within Horizon Europe. Successful proposals require a strong consortium, a well-designed research and training programme, and a clear strategy for scientific and societal impact. Early preparation is therefore essential.
