€ 650 million awarded through CEF Energy: success for Repsol with the AGUAYO II project

The European Commission has allocated nearly € 650 million to cross-border energy and infrastructure projects under the CEF Energy programme. In total, fourteen projects have been selected, including the AGUAYO II project of Repsol, which our specialists supported during the CEF Energy application process. Each of these projects contributes in its own way to strengthening Europe’s energy security and advancing the integration of renewable energy across the EU.

Successful CEF Energy projects

The selected projects focus on both electricity and hydrogen infrastructure, two key pillars of the European Green Deal and the EU’s climate ambitions. Of the total funding envelope, approximately € 470 million has been allocated to six electricity projects, while around € 176 million is earmarked for eight hydrogen projects.

Hezelburcht supports Repsol’s successful AGUAYO II project

The largest CEF Energy budget has been awarded to the AGUAYO II project of Repsol, which was supported by Hezelburcht’s specialists during the CEF Energy application process. With € 180 million awarded to this electricity project, the outcome represents a major success. Located in Spain, the project focuses on the construction of a reversible pumped-storage hydropower plant. It combines more efficient renewable energy generation with underground installations, eliminating the need to expand existing water reservoirs. This approach minimises environmental impact while delivering substantial energy storage capacity.

Other impactful electricity and hydrogen projects

In addition to AGUAYO II, five other electricity projects and eight hydrogen projects have been awarded funding. These initiatives address a wide range of priorities, including the protection of critical energy infrastructure against threats such as cyberattacks, the development of smart electricity grids, and a large-scale hydrogen storage project in Germany. Notably, this marks the first time CEF support has been awarded to a concrete hydrogen project.
