CEF Digital has announced new calls for 2024-2027
New CEF Digital calls have been announced for 2024-2027. A €865 million budget has been made available to improve Europe’s connectivity infrastructure. The European Commission has adopted the second Connecting Europe Facility Digital (CEF Digital) work programme, outlining its objectives and scope.
New CEF Digital focus areas
CEF Digital’s new work programme has several focus areas:
Deployment of 5G infrastructures in Europe
Financial support for large-scale projects promoting the realisation of gigabit and standalone 5G infrastructures. Also, the integration of edge cloud and computing capabilities in vertical sectoral applications such as health, manufacturing, transport, and logistics.
Deployment and significant upgrade of backbone networks
Including quantum communication networks and undersea cables to improve the performance, resilience, and capacity of connectivity networks within and between Member States and between the Union and third countries.
Deployment of operational digital platforms for transport or energy infrastructures
This is by optimising information and communication technology (ICT) energy use and reducing its environmental impact. These operational digital platforms will be implemented and integrated with existing and emerging European data, cloud, edge computing, and connectivity infrastructures.
Aim of CEF Digital
CEF Digital has announced new calls with new focus areas due to the need to improve Europe’s connectivity infrastructure. This is needed to meet the Digital Decade 2030 targets. Here, the aim is to connect all citizens and businesses with 5G and gigabit connectivity.
New calls
The first new CEF Digital calls will open for applications in the coming days. Previously, 65 projects have been funded by the CEF Digital scheme. The maximum budget for the entire scheme is €2 billion.
