Bornholm Energy Island – Energinet & 50 Hertz
As we are all aware by now, our current society is facing a shortage of electricity capacity. The electricity demand continues to rise, which means more energy must be generated—ideally, in a sustainable way. The Bornholm Energy Island (BEI) project, a collaboration between Energinet and 50Hertz, is therefore focused on combining offshore wind farms to fully exploit the potential of wind power.
Bornholm Energy Island project
Energinet and 50Hertz have joined forces to make optimal use of wind energy. As part of the Bornholm Energy Island project, several cross-border wind farms in the Baltic Sea, situated between Germany and Denmark, are being connected into one single hub. This enables the sharing of green electricity with consumers in both Germany and Denmark, helping to address the capacity issue. Furthermore, this innovative concept creates new opportunities for international cooperation, paving the way for a future where offshore wind power is no longer generated solely by individual countries.
Power Station on the Island of Bornholm
The two parties aim to jointly establish a power station on the island of Bornholm, which will then be able to supply electricity to Denmark, Germany, and potentially other countries in Europe. The electricity generated by the wind farms will be converted at this station into high-voltage direct current, which will then be transported across the sea and land to substations in both countries. This connection also has the added benefit of linking the island to both Denmark and the wider European grid.
Successful CEF Energy application
For the BEI project to succeed, specialists from Hezelburcht supported the partnership in applying for CEF Energy funding. This programme stimulates and provides an opportunity to invest in a stronger and more sustainable European energy network and its supporting infrastructure. With great success! More than half of the CEF Energy budget was allocated to the Bornholm Energy Island project. A fantastic achievement and the result of a successful and, above all, pleasant collaboration—one we are truly proud of!
