€ 1 billion available for the European Defence Fund in 2026
The EC has published the work programme for the European Defence Fund 2026, marking a significant step forward. In 2026, a budget of no less than € 1 billion will be made available for collaborative defence research and development. With this investment, Europe aims to strengthen its strategic autonomy and further deepen cooperation between Member States in the field of defence innovation.
€ 4 billion already invested in defence innovation
Since the launch of the European Defence Fund in 2021, 224 projects have been supported, representing a total investment of approximately € 4 billion. These projects contribute to the development of shared defence technologies and reinforce the European defence industrial base. The European Defence Fund 2026 builds on these results, with a strong focus on joint capability development and technological advancement.
European Defence Fund 2026 work programme
The 2026 work programme includes a total of 31 research and development topics. These are spread across priority areas jointly agreed by EU Member States, ranging from core defence capabilities and advanced or future technologies to innovation in defence applications. Within EDF 2026, continued and explicit attention is given to small and medium-sized enterprises, which are a key driver of innovation within the defence sector.
In line with the European Defence Industrial Strategy, EDF also introduces new measures to accelerate and streamline innovation processes. In particular, these measures aim to reduce development cycles and expedite the deployment of disruptive technologies. This responds to Europe’s growing need for flexibility and technological resilience.
