New European funding programme AGILE accelerates defence technologies
The European Commission is expected to launch a new funding programme for defence technologies: AGILE (Programme for Agile and Rapid Defence Innovation). With this initiative, the EC takes a significant step towards strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities. The programme creates substantial opportunities for innovative companies aiming to contribute to fast and effective defence innovation.
Significant funding boost for defence technologies with AGILE in 2027
With a total budget of €115 million in 2027, AGILE is designed to accelerate both the development and deployment of cutting-edge defence technologies. The programme responds to the growing demand for agile, future-proof solutions within the European defence sector. Key focus areas include artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and drone applications.
The first calls for proposals are expected in early 2027, giving organisations time to establish strategic partnerships and further develop innovative project ideas.
Strong focus on speed and collaboration
What sets AGILE apart is its strong emphasis on speed and collaboration. Projects can be approved within approximately four months of submission, making the programme particularly attractive for organisations looking to move quickly and create impact. In addition, AGILE actively fosters collaboration between technology developers and defence stakeholders, enabling innovations to be translated into real-world applications more rapidly.
New opportunities for companies and start-ups
The programme specifically targets companies, particularly SMEs, start-ups and scale-ups, from EU Member States, EEA-EFTA countries and Ukraine. Funding per project ranges from €1 million to €5 million. As such, AGILE supports not only technological development but also scaling and implementation.
Expanding possibilities with AGILE for defence technologies
AGILE also includes additional incentives to encourage companies to establish or expand their activities within the EU. This contributes to a stronger and more autonomous European innovation ecosystem.
Furthermore, the programme provides opportunities to test new concepts and technologies in real-world settings. This includes experimental applications and innovative collaboration models that support more efficient and cost-effective defence solutions.
What does AGILE mean for your organisation?
For organisations active in high-tech, AI, cybersecurity, space or dual-use technologies, AGILE offers a unique opportunity to bring innovations to market faster. The combination of substantial funding, rapid evaluation and strong European collaboration makes this programme particularly compelling. The programme is currently subject to approval by the European Parliament and the Council, with the official launch expected in early 2027.
