LIFE programme expected to reopen in spring 2026
The LIFE programme, the European funding programme for environment, climate and nature, is expected to reopen in spring 2026. This will once again allow organisations across Europe to apply for funding for sustainable and environmentally friendly projects. For the 2021–2027 programme period, a total budget of € 5.4 billion has been made available to stimulate and support such initiatives. The deadline for the upcoming LIFE call is expected to fall in September or October 2026.
Which projects will be eligible for LIFE funding in 2026?
The LIFE programme consists of four broad sub-programmes. Their wide scope means that a large variety of projects can qualify, increasing the chances of successful implementation. The LIFE 2026 sub-programmes are:
- Nature and biodiversity;
- Circular economy and quality of life;
- Climate change mitigation and adaptation;
- Clean energy transition.
What are the key eligibility requirements?
The LIFE programme supports environmental, nature and climate projects that contribute to European policy objectives within the four thematic areas. To qualify for LIFE funding, whether as a single applicant or in collaboration, your project must meet several criteria, including:
- A minimum total project budget of € 1 million;
- A project duration of between 2 and 5 years;
- The project should be in the pilot or demonstration phase, with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6 to 8.
Applying for LIFE funding in 2026?
Following the most recent LIFE call, which closed last September, the next call is expected to open in spring 2026. Although the exact launch date has not yet been officially confirmed, this timeframe is widely anticipated by experts.
