Developing deep tech as a startup? The NATO Innovation Fund helps

Are you a startup looking to invest in the development of new defence and security technologies? The NATO Innovation Fund (NIF) may be the perfect opportunity. This investment fund was established by NATO to stimulate innovation among entities based in NATO member states, contributing to a safer and stronger Alliance. With a budget of approximately € 1 billion, the programme encourages the development of deep tech with both military and civilian applications.

What Are the Focus Areas of the NATO Innovation Fund?

The fund supports the development of deep tech in areas such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Hypersonic Weapons
  • Biotechnology
  • Autonomous Systems
  • Energy Storage
  • Cybersecurity
  • Space Technologies

Who Is Eligible?

The NATO Innovation Fund invests in innovative startups located in one of the participating NATO member states. The goal is to support the development of technologies that will enhance NATO’s future defence capabilities. The fund’s € 1 billion budget is contributed by 24 NATO countries. A major benefit for startups is the opportunity to easily connect with stakeholders across these 24 nations. Initial investments can reach up to € 15 million per project, with the possibility of follow-on investments for further development.

Combined with the DIANA Grant Programme

The NIF-fund works closely with DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic), another NATO initiative. Unlike the NIF, DIANA focuses on accelerating defence technologies (TRL) through test centres and innovation hubs located in NATO countries.

With both programmes, NATO is investing in the development of deep tech to maintain a technological edge over other global players and ensure continued strength and security.

Applying to the NATO Innovation Fund for Defence Technologies in 2025?

Unlike many other funding schemes, the NATO Innovation Fund does not have fixed application rounds or deadlines. Instead, applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Startups are encouraged to prepare a compelling pitch. If the fund sees potential in the startup’s proposition, it will consider investing. The DIANA scheme, on the other hand, does operate with specific deadlines.
